Building a Garage Often Involves Innovative Design
This client bought their home in Narragansett, Rhode Island, in 2012. Not many updates had been made on this gorgeous house, which had been built in the 1940s.

The first thing the new homeowners wanted was to widen the garage doors to make it easier to get their two SUVs in. The "before" picture (below) shows a metal door, which had probably been added in the last 25 years.
The challenges we faced included fitting larger garage doors within a very tight space and still allowing enough room for the inside operating hardware and enough clearance for the door and operator to fit below the ceiling when fully open.
Working within these restrictions, we widened the doors to a full eight feet by cutting the foundation and replacing the existing header with an engineered laminated beam. The result is a very functional garage with a much improved look, as you can see from the pic below.
