Kitchen Renovation: Overhaul on Providence's East Side

THE CHALLENGE

This particular kitchen had been badly remodeled in the past, which almost always brings extra challenges to the project. The homeowner wanted an open kitchen and dining area with a new layout, plenty of storage and all new surfaces. This being an older home, in addition to the poor remodeling that had been done before, meant we needed to do some structural repairs and update the electrical as well.

OUR APPROACH

Working with the homeowner to determine their vision and needs for the kitchen, we redesigned the kitchen’s layout to open it up, improve traffic flow and efficiency. We completely gutted the space and:

  • Replaced the knob and tube wiring

  • Straightened and reinforced the framing in the ceiling and the floor

  • Removed a bearing wall containing a nook and closet, which opened up the dining area and allowed more light into the space

  • Installed recess lighting and new tile flooring

  • Replaced the windows in the dining area with larger more efficient windows to add even more light

  • Installed the new cabinets, countertops and a large island with built-in storage

THE RESULT

All new cabinetry, including the kicthen island and built-ins in the dining room provided the homeowner their desired storage space. The kitchen cabinets are quartersawn oak with Burnt Umber stain from Crown Point Cabinetry. The dining room cabinets are built of sapele mahogany with Mission Brown stain.

The kitchen and dining area floor is tiled in a herringbone pattern with 12x24 Seastone Black tile with smoke grey grout. We installed a beautiful porcelain farmers sink and the countertops are Ubatuba leathered granite.
