Choosing Custom Cabinets: What to Know and How We Help

Since we have our own custom cabinet shop in-house, we thought we’t take this opportunity to share some information about the benefits of custom cabinetry. As ever, our goal is to help our clients stay informed so they can make the best decisions for their home projects.

The details below hold true for the many different projects that include cabinetry and, in addition to kitchens and bathrooms, we also build cabinets for mudrooms, entertainment centers, office spaces, and more!

What to Keep in Mind When Choosing Cabinets

A lot goes into incorporating cabinets in a new home or renovated space. From the design of the room and understanding what your storage and functional needs are, to choosing the cabinet style and materials, it takes a lot of thought and effort to produce the results you’ve been dreaming of. In the end, you want something that meets your needs, reflects your personal style, and fits your budget and timeline. A good contractor will help you through this process every step of the way to ensure you get the right cabinets for you, so make sure you’re working with someone you trust and who communicates well.

Timing is Key with Cabinets

Once you’ve tackled the momentous task of finalizing a design, choosing the cabinets is the next big step. Since stock cabinets typically take 8-12 weeks to deliver (depending on the complexity), the whole construction schedule is built around the delivery of your cabinets. As you can imagine, especially with kitchens and bathrooms, there’s a lot that can’t be done until the cabinets are installed.

Because we build cabinets in-house, we have the advantage of tightening that lead time. Currently, we’re delivering final cabinets in 4-6 weeks. So if you have a tighter timeline, custom cabinets could help you stay on schedule.

Cabinet Options Can Be Overwhelming

When choosing cabinets, you need to consider things like build (framed vs. frameless), style (shaker, flat panel, arched, bead board, etc.), and features (pull-out trashcan, appliance garages, etc.). The good news is, if your have your heart set on custom features (think something built to fit a specific space or design), our custom cabinet shop can deliver—the possibilities are endless!

Since the choices can be overwhelming, we’re happy to lend our expertise to help you find the cabinets that are right for you. Based on the final room design and your style preferences, we'll make recommendations for cabinet options that work for you and your space. And in our shop, you can see cabinet doors firsthand with the exact style and finish we recommend.

Glass doors? Even more to consider!

There are many different types of glass: antique, clear, seeded, etched, and more. When deciding whether to opt for glass cabinet doors, consider what you'll store in the cabinets, keeping in mind that the contents will always be visible. These cabinets are great for displaying collectibles or beautiful dishware, and give the space a more open feel. You might also consider including low voltage interior lighting in your glass door cabinets, which can amplify the display and also function as additional lighting in the evening.

Cabinet Materials: Looks Good vs. Is Good

A lot of stock cabinets may look good, but that doesn't mean they are made of quality materials. Cabinets are a big investment, so you want something that's going to last. Most cabinet boxes (the space that actually holds your stuff) are made of plywood and its quality affects your cabinets’ longevity. In our cabinet shop, we use a 3/4-inch plywood box, which is a lot heavier than nearly all other cabinets that you'll find.

Hardware is important as well. We typically use Blum for both drawer slides and door hinges. Blum is renowned for its quality and reasonable prices—a win-win for everyone. Of course, your input matters and if you have specific knobs or handles that you want to use, we will work with that

We pay close attention to the craftsmanship of all aspects of our cabinets—seamless, sturdy frames, quietly closing doors and drawers—we ensure our cabinets are top-notch every step of the way.
